RoboCop (1987)

RoboCop is much smarter than it looks. Yes, it's an extremely violent action film, but underneath it's a brilliant satire of corporations, privatisation and TV news. A company has taken over the police and sees law enforcement purely as a business - what could go wrong? The science of turning a dead police officer into a cyborg is waved away, and the malfunctioning robot in the boardroom is a darkly funny reminder that broken machines can be more dangerous than working ones. What stands out now is how much of it doesn't feel like science fiction anymore.
