The Martian (2015)
Ranked #3 of 100 · Scientific accuracy 9/10 · Overall 8/10
In many ways this is what I wish all sci-fi movies were like. Here, Ridley Scott has created a highly entertaining survival drama that combines humor, tension, and scientific problem-solving to create an engaging story about human ingenuity and determination. The science is exceptionally high for space travel, Mars colonization, and botanical science, with realistic depictions of the challenges of surviving on Mars and the physics of space travel. ). In no other movie that I can think of did the hero save the situation by using hexadecimals, and making it look relatively cool. The Martian influenced discussions about Mars exploration and showed how science fiction could inspire interest in real space programs and scientific literacy. It went against the flow of things gettign dumbed down - here is a blockbuster that refuses to talk down to the audience. Its prescience is notable in predicting Mars colonization efforts, the privatization of space exploration, international cooperation in space, and the potential for space agriculture. The film's entertainment value comes from its perfect balance of humor, tension, and scientific problem-solving that makes complex concepts accessible and engaging. The film's influence extends beyond cinema to space exploration advocacy and science education, inspiring interest in Mars missions and space technology. Its vision of Mars colonization and the challenges of long-term space survival anticipated real developments in space exploration and Mars mission planning. The film's themes about human ingenuity, the power of science to solve problems, and the importance of international cooperation resonate with contemporary space exploration efforts. While some science is simplified for dramatic purposes, the movie's commitment to scientific accuracy created new standards for realistic space movies. One of the best things about The Martian is that it ignores convention and has no bad guy. Seriously, everyone in the movie is trying to do the right thing. There is conflict, just as there would be in any situation like this, but the conflict is resolved via discussions and being fair-minded, as it should be in the real world. I almost knocked this down the rankings because of the unfortunate promotional posters that showed Matt Damon on the surface of Mars with a giant cracked hole in his helmet, so that you can see his face. But geez, he'd be dead.
